Reflexivity and Resultatives

چکیده
This paper presents data from Kannada that resist either type of analysis ( 2). The grammar of reflexivity in Kannada reveals that resultatives must be syntactically distinguished both from ECM constructions and from simple transitives. Simple transitives and ECM constructions allow verbal reflexive marking when reflexive, but resultatives do not. To explain this, we assign Kannada resultatives the base configuration in (2). Here both the result predicate (flat) and the means predicate, when transitive (hammer), project a DP complement, neither one a silent pronoun.

Resultative Markedness and Implicational Hierarchies
This is because the former are lexically implicated or entailed, and thus are more available and less expensive than the latter in the sense that they involve less practical reasoning. In addition, in terms of the strong-weak distinction, an implicational universal can be posited, namely that if a language has strong resultatives, it must have weak resultatives as well (Washio 1999, 2002). Seco...
متن کاملAdverb agreement in Urdu, Sindhi and Punjabi
We discuss agreeing adverbs in Urdu, Sindhi and Punjabi. We adduce crosslinguistic evidence that is based mainly on similar patterns in Romance and posit that there is a close connection between resultatives and so-called pseudo-resultatives, which the agreeing adverbs appear to instantiate. We propose a diachronic relationship by which the originally predicative part of a resultative is reinte...
متن کاملEnglish Resultatives Revisited
This paper focusses on the English adjectival resultative construction, as exempliied in examples (1)-(4). (1) John hammered the metal at. (2) The river froze solid. (3) The dog barked itself hoarse. (4) The dog barked the neighbours awake. Result predication occurs with both transitive and intransitive verbs. In the transitive case, the result state is predicated of the object (1). For intrans...
متن کاملWord Order in Resultatives
This paper advances a general account of word order in resultatives. My conclusions derive from consideration of several languages, both VO and OV. Featured from the first group are English, Igbo, Edo, Ambae, Paamese, Mandarin, Shanghainese, Thai, and Vietnamese; included in the second are German, Ijọ, Japanese, Malayalam, Kannada, Mizo, and Yi. Resultatives are single clause constructions comp...
متن کاملA Constructional Approach to Argument Realization of Chinese Resultatives
This paper argues for a constructional view of the resultative constructions, specifically the resultative-verb compounds (henceforth RVCs). We claim that the effect of the construction must be taken into account in the realization of arguments, and the realization must be moderated by the linking rules. This paper is organized as follows: Section 2 provides a brief definition of resultatives i...
